Ribavirin was designed to disrupt the structure of DNA and RNA molecules of various viruses, including the hep C virus and various hemorrhagic viruses. It is a synthetic substance that is destined for lengthy use (of up to 46 weeks and longer), and thus its systematic consumption may lead to some negative health effects. Moreover, Ribavirin will likely be taken in combination with another anti-virus drug, whose contraindications and negative effects should also be studied before the beginning of therapy.
The undesired effects that Ribavirin may produce can be divided into 3 groups: the ones that occur most often (in more than 10% of cases), the less frequent ones (less than 10%), and very rare ones (1% or less).
The copegus adverse effects that occur with the highest frequency are: loss of appetite, loss of weight, digestive system disturbances (like liquid stool), headaches, vomit, dryness in mouth, muscle pain, itching or skin rash, increased loss of hair, difficulty breathing. Some neurological consequences like anxiety, depression, tiredness, loss of attention focus and irritability can also take place.
The second group includes the following manifestations, that occur in less than 10% of individuals taking the remedy: herpes virus activation, urine infections, bronchitis, candida in mouth, lymphadenopathy, anemia, thrombocytopenia, thyroid gland secretion dysfunctions, difficulty remembering, taste disorders, tremor, weakness, emotional breakdowns, nervousness and anxiety, aggressive behavior, low sexual desire, migraines, nightmares, fainting, fogging in the eyes, eye ball inflammation, eye pain, ear pain, dizziness, accelerated heart rate, tachycardia, peripheral edema, hot flashes, dry throat, rhinitis, blocked nose and other illnesses related to nasal cavities, dyspepsia, flatulence, dry mouth, ulceration of the oral mucosa.
The last group of ribavirin side effects has very rare occurrence, with less than 1% people suffering from these undesired effects: lactic acidosis, influenza, pneumonia, affective lability, apathy, ringing in the ears, pain in the larynx and pharynx, acquired lipodystrophy, infections of the lower respiratory tract, skin infections, external otitis, suicidal mood, psychotic disorders, hallucinations, peripheral neuropathy, liver dysfunction, fatty liver, cholangitis, liver cancer, gastric ulcer.
In addition to the above, you need to check for individual intolerance to some substances contained in the pill, and the contraindications to taking the drug. The most commonly encountered factors that should stop you from taking the pill are:
- Increased sensitivity to ribavirin or any of the components of the drug
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Being underage
- Hemoglobin-related disorders (thalassemia, sickle cell anemia)
- Decompensation of liver function
- Cirrhosis of the liver with decompensated function (6 points or more in individuals with co-infection HIV-Hepatitis according to the Child-Pugh scale)
- Depressive states and/or suicidal inclination
The complete information on undesired effects of Ribavirin can be found in the medical instruction leaflet inside the packaging. Read it carefully and consult your attending physician.
